Coaching Staff
Matt Merten
Coach Matt Merten is a 1986 graduate of Mount Saint Charles. Merten was a First-Team All-State goaltender for the Mounties in 1985. After graduating from Mount, he played on the Stratford (Ontario) Junior B team that won the 1986 All-Ontario championship, and he was drafted by the Canucks. Merten attended Providence College from 1987-90 and started in goal for the Friars for four years, succeeding eventual two-time Stanley Cup champion Chris Terreri. He attended the Canucks’ training camp in 1990 and played for the minor-league Fort Wayne Komets and Greensboro Monarchs until an injury ended his playing career in 1991. Merten moved on to help build a club hockey program at Nipmuc Regional High in Upton, Massachusetts where he also teaches social studies, officiates girls’ lacrosse, and is a former assistant lacrosse coach. He coached the hockey team to the playoffs in just its second season of existence. He took over the boys program back in 2019, he has lead them to back to back state championships in 2020 and 2021.
